Overview

About pool deck resurfacing

Pool deck resurfacing in San Diego gives a cracked, stained, or sun-scorched concrete deck a new surface without tearing it out. We repair the slab, bond a polymer-modified cement texture coat to the existing concrete, and finish it with a sealer built for sun, splash, and bare feet. The deck keeps its layout, drains, and edges.

The finish is chosen for how a pool deck is actually used. Knockdown and cool deck style textures add grip when wet. Lighter colors reflect more sun and are typically easier on bare feet than dark, weathered concrete. Sealers are selected with chlorine and salt-water pools in mind.

Our work is the concrete deck, patio, and walkways around the pool. Pool interiors, plaster, and tile are separate specialty trades.

Who it's for

Why homeowners and businesses choose it

  • Grip where feet are wet

Smooth concrete and worn sealers get slick around water. A sprayed and troweled knockdown texture gives bare feet something to hold, and an anti-slip additive in the sealer adds traction without changing the look. We tune the texture to each area: firmer grip at steps and the pool edge, a softer feel where people lounge.

  • Cooler under bare feet

Color matters as much as material in the sun. Light sand, cream, and soft gray tones reflect more heat than dark or weathered concrete, and cool deck style acrylic coatings are designed for barefoot comfort. No deck stays cool in full afternoon sun, but a light, textured finish is typically far easier to cross than bare gray concrete.

  • A renewed look without demolition

Resurfacing covers stains, patched areas, and mismatched old repairs with one continuous surface. Color bands, borders, and scored patterns can frame the pool or define a lounge area. Because the existing slab stays, there is no breakout next to the pool, no heavy equipment near the shell, and far less disruption to landscaping.

  • One finish for patio and driveway

A pool deck coating can continue across the patio and walkways so the whole yard reads as one surface. Patio coating uses the same texture and sealer as the deck. Driveway coating gets a system and sealer chosen for tire traffic, in a matching or complementary tone.

System specs

What goes into the system

SpecTypical
SystemPolymer-modified cement texture coat over a bond coat, finished with an exterior acrylic or similar sealer
Typical thicknessAbout 1/8 inch for spray-down knockdown textures; thicker where the surface needs rebuilding
TextureKnockdown, cool deck style splatter, or light broom; anti-slip additive available in the sealer
ColorLight, sun-reflective tones recommended; borders and scored patterns available
JointsControl joints honored; the deck-to-coping joint kept open and flexible
Return to serviceFoot traffic typically after about 24 hours; furniture and full use typically a few days later
MaintenanceRinse off salt and chemical splash-out; reseal typically every few years

Cure times vary with product, temperature, and humidity. Your written estimate names the system and the timeline for your deck.

Process

How we install it

  1. 01

    Inspection and moisture test

We walk the space, measure it, and look closely at the slab: cracks, spalls, old coatings, oil stains and drainage. Then we test for moisture vapor with a calcium chloride test or a relative humidity probe. The results decide the system, the primer and the prep, and they go into your written estimate.

  2. 02

    Diamond grinding and surface prep

We grind the concrete with diamond tooling and dust collection to a consistent profile, typically CSP 2 to 3, about the feel of medium sandpaper. Grinding removes weak surface paste, old sealers and contamination, so the base coat bonds into the slab instead of sitting on top of it.

  3. 03

    Crack and spall repair

Cracks, chips, spalls and pitting are filled with a polyurea or epoxy repair material and ground flush with the floor. Control joints are cleaned out and either filled or kept open, depending on the system. Repairs stop defects from showing through the finish and remove weak points where a coating could lift.

  4. 04

    Base coat and broadcast

The base coat goes down: 100% solids epoxy, polyurea, or a moisture-mitigating primer where testing called for one. Flake floors get color chips broadcast to full coverage. Metallic floors get pigments worked by hand. Commercial floors may get a quartz broadcast. Loose material is scraped and vacuumed once the base cures.

  5. 05

UV-stable topcoat, cure and return to service

A clear polyaspartic or polyurea topcoat seals the floor, sets the sheen and resists UV yellowing, with slip-resistant texture available. Foot traffic typically returns within about 24 hours. Vehicles typically wait 24 to 48 hours on polyaspartic systems and 3 to 7 days on epoxy, depending on product and temperature.

  • On a pool deck, the coating steps become a texture system: after cleaning, mechanical prep, and repairs, we apply a bond coat, spray and knock down the texture coat, then color and seal it. The pool typically stays filled, and we protect the waterline and coping while we work.
  • We do not bury expansion or control joints. The joint where the deck meets the pool coping is designed to move, so it stays open and gets a flexible joint sealant rather than a layer of rigid overlay.
  • Cracks near the pool are assessed before any repair. Stable cracks are filled and bridged. Cracks that keep moving with the soil or the pool structure are flagged, because no coating will stop that movement.
San Diego conditions

Built for coastal sun, salt air, and moisture

  • Pool deck resurfacing near the San Diego coast

Closer to the ocean, salt air and damp marine-layer mornings shape both the finish and the schedule. Moist air slows how fast overlays and sealers cure, so coastal decks are coated after the morning damp burns off and given the full cure window. A breathable, exterior-rated sealer suits that climate better than a heavy film that can trap moisture.

  • Inland heat and barefoot comfort

Away from the coast, Poway, Rancho Santa Fe, and Carmel Valley see hotter, drier summers, and a dark deck can be uncomfortable to cross barefoot. Light, textured finishes are the usual answer there. UV is strong across the county all year, so we choose colors and sealers made for constant sun rather than ones that chalk or fade early.

  • Salt-water pools and pool chemicals

Salt in splash-out dries into crystals that wear down sealers, and water that reaches the slab through open cracks or joints can attack the concrete underneath. Chlorinated water and pool chemicals are hard on finishes too. We seal salt-water pool decks with that exposure in mind, keep joints sealed, and recommend a freshwater rinse and periodic resealing.
